Historic Morey House

Redlands – known in 1900 as “The City of Millionaires,” and later as “The City of Beautiful Homes” welcomes you! Founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1888, Redlands is a quintessential “big town” with a “small town” feel. For much of its history, it was the “Washington Navel Orange Growing Capital of the World,” with the citrus industry as the main focus of its economy.

Through the years the economy may have changed, but that special feeling of community in a small town hasn’t. Tree-lined State Street is still comprised primarily of beautiful historic buildings and locally-owned shops and boutiques.

Some of its most famous buildings like A.K. Smiley Public Library, a Moorish-style library built in 1898, and the Redlands Bowl built in 1930 and home of the oldest continuously free outdoor concert series in California, are merely steps from historic downtown. One can stroll through the Smiley Park neighborhood, filled with turn-of-the-century bungalows as well as landmark homes. Or, cruise by some famous homes, like “America’s Favorite Victorian,” the Morey House, on Terracina Boulevard, see the stately homes of Olive Avenue, and Highland Avenue, the “Butler Belt,” so known because at one time that was the most dense population of homes employing butlers in the City!

Visit Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, a home museum featured on the PBS series “America’s Castles,” and don’t miss a walk through Prospect Park. Redlands’ parks are perfect for picnicking, and are designed with this in mind. And, the beautiful campus of University of Redlands, founded 1907, is worth seeing.

Historic downtown Redlands is situated in the heart of the community and beckons visitors with welcoming tree-lined streets, quaint shops, and a variety of dining and entertainment options. Visitors can easily hop on one of Redlands trolleys and head straight for downtown.

Downtown Redlands is the place to discover a bounty of unique shops, galleries, and institutions. Shops with the popular styles of home décor, up-to-the-minute fashions, skate and snowboarding gear, and personal services are just a sampling of what is available to you.

Looking for great ambiance, try downtown for dining! If you fancy the fare an English pub offers, Greek cuisine, hot n’ spicy Mexican food, or even crave a good ol’ burger, our downtown restaurants provide it all. Find one of our specialty bakeries or ice cream parlor to make your experience complete.

Home of one of the most successful farmers markets in southern California, downtown Redlands is the place to be. Established in 1988, 150 vendors and merchants participate in Redlands Market Night, which attractes thousands of people weekly.

Market Night visitors are welcomed into an inviting atmosphere with twinkle-lighted trees, brick sidewalks, historic buildings, and great musical entertainment. The downtown shopkeepers are open every Thursday night from 6 pm until 9:30 pm. Enjoy the seasonal fruits and vegetables from local growers, lovely cut flowers, roasted nuts, and freshly baked breads.

Historic downtown provides a glimpse of the past with its turn-of-the-century architecture. Pedestrians can learn about the community’s beginnings by reading the plaques that have been installed on historically significant buildings. Come and enjoy our charm!
